In 1948, at the age of 62, Karen Blixen was introduced to the 29-year old poet, Thorkild Bjørnvig by his publisher’s beautiful wife. The Baroness Karen Blixen took him under her wing and the two shared a powerful, dangerous and intimate friendship. What follows is a tale of passion, art, humor, love and lust between a young poet, a grand dame of literature, and the beautiful young wife of their patron. Full of tension and poetry, the play is inspired by anecdotes, letters and books by and about both Blixen and Bjørnvig. Playwright Thor Bjørn Krebs has created a provocative interpretation of the relationship between these three characters, while questioning and challenging the role and nature of the artist. THE BARONESS premiered to rave reviews at the Folketeatret in Copenhagen in 2011 and was a Reumert Award nominee for Play of the Year in 2012 (the Danish equivalent of the Tony Award).
