Projects

Since its founding in 2008, AO International has been actively developing and participating in several projects that share and support the international exchange in theater and art.

DESORIENTACIÓN – a reading series of contemporary Chilean and U.S. plays

From April – July, 2011 AOI Associate Sarah Rose Leonard curated and produced a cross-cultural play reading series in Santiago, Chile that focused on contemporary playwriting in Chile and the U.S. Desorientación acted as a cultural exchange through the written word. The readings took place at Lastarria 90 – the innovative hot-house for new work in Santiago –  in conjunction with the North American Institute.

The series featured a talk- back with prominent and upcoming Chilean writers, directors, actors and theatre-makers who participated in a discussion about the play in relation to the theme of the series: The Phenomena of Disorientation in Contemporary Chilean and North American playwriting. The aim of the series was to explore why the topic of disorientation is so pervasive in contemporary playwrighting, and how it manifests differently between cultures.

The AOI writers who had their plays read in translation were Carlos Murillo, Christina Masciotti and Lisa D’Amour.

FESTIVAL OF NEW AMERICAN PLAYS in Germany

The festival features new American playwriting in Germany. Created and developed by Christine Richter-Nilsson, the first festival took place in 2008 at the Theater Bielefeld and featured the work of playwrights such as Anne Washburn, Thomas Bradshaw, Sheila Callaghan in German translation.

Festival director Christine Richter -Nilsson and Co-curator Antje Oegel collaborate with six American theater institutions (Summer Play Festival, Yale Repertory Theater, Soho Rep., New Dramatists, Flea Theater and Clubbed Thumb) to create a festival presenting some of the most current and challenging US American new work.

After the tremendous success of the 2010 festival VOICES OF CHANGE that introduced the work of Michael Yates Crowley, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Alena Smith, Jason Grote we look forward to a next festival in June 2011 in Berlin.
